High School Football
This is the beginning of a new series exploring High School Football . . .
Suffolk Downs
I spent an amazing morning (before the rain set in) at Suffolk Downs the day before the races. Here is Pearl with Bride Way Bay, George, Lorah, Bobby, and Pancho.
Dan Donovan
Dan "Buddy" Donovan, originally from East Boston along with his wife Margie welcomed me into their Revere Beach apartment and I heard stories that truly falls into "truth is stranger than fiction". A World War II Marine Vet; our time was too short and I look forward to hearing more tales from a remarkable life.
Return to Sarkin Island
Upon entering the studio my eyes instantly drew me into yet another narrative of Jon Sarkin's . . .
Somerville Boxing Club
First time I had the opportunity to see some of Alex's amateur boxers in action at Somerville High School.
Youth (Looking Through the Eye Piece)
Continuing with Luke on this series. Taking advantage of summer's late hours.
Hardy Prince, WWII Naval Aviator
My father, Michael Charney, who served in WWII, was 60 when I was born. One of my great disappointments is that I didn't become a photographer until after he had passed on. I met Hardy while working on a newspaper article and quickly asked if I could visit him and take a portrait for a series on veterans of foreign wars. Hardy was gracious enough to let me do that. He is 96 and lives independently where he and his late wife raised their five sons.
Youth (Looking Through the Eye Piece)
Approaching this new series has been pretty much straightforward--environmental portraits of youth create an echo/a ripple/like the space between lightning and the pop of thunder. Shane, Parke, Kara, & Falyn.
Tali
While visiting Jerusalem, our family was very fortunate to meet with Tali Friedman at the Mahane Yehuda Market. She guided us as we met different shop owners and collected items for Tali and her brother to prepare (with our help) in her studio directly above the market. It was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience . . .
Boston Youth Wrestling
While searching for the gym at Madison Park Technical Vocational High School in Roxbury, I was lucky to come across Jose, a helpful student who led me to the gym. I was doubly lucky to take his portrait, launching my new photo project with the Boston Youth Wrestling. Once in the gym, I met four coaches, a different Jose, Chris, Justin, & Brad who shared stories, and their evident passion about wrestling and the kids they teach. I have clearly started a new project I know will develop into a deeply rewarding series.
